How it Works

With American Firearms Training’s Introduction to Pistol Safety online course, it couldn’t be easier to satisfy the educational requirement for your concealed carry permit. Here’s how it works:

1. Ensure that your state allows an online class to satisfy the educational requirement for a concealed carry permit. Currently Introduction to Pistol Safety is accepted in Virginia for both resident and non-resident permits.

2. Click on the Lets Get Started link on the home page of this website.

3. Fill out the personal and credit card information in order to initiate the class. Remember, credit card information must match the name that you plan on printing out on your certificate of completion for identity verification purposes.

4. Initiate the class. Once the class has been begun, you have five days to complete the final exam with a passing score. The vast majority of our students complete our course and exam in about ninety minutes.

The class is comprised of an introduction and six short chapters. Each chapter is followed by a quiz. The student must score a 50% or greater on each quiz to advance on to the next chapter. Questions will be asked not only about the course material but also about the video itself to ensure that the student is paying attention. After the short closing video, the student is prompted to take the final exam which is comprised of 20 questions based on the video sections. A score of 80% or higher on the final is required to pass the exam and receive a certificate of completion.

The certificate of completion should be printed out along with the concealed carry permit application in the state you desire to apply in. Fill out the concealed carry permit application, these are state specific and can be found on the home page of this website by clicking under Printables on the left side of the page. Both of these documents should be taken down to the clerk of the court in the locality where you live to initiate the process.

Please remember that passing the class does not ensure that you will get your concealed carry permit. The state whose permit you are persuing will perform a background check to ensure your viability as a permit holder. Introduction to Pistol Safety only fulfills the educational requirement in many states.
